Summer tea party

This is how I got the idea of my photostories about kitchens. There are some behind the scenes and a list of inspirational films about cozy kitchens.

It was one of those evenings that I miss so much being an immigrant. The whole family gathered in friends’ house in my native town Chernihiv (Ukraine). There were the closest people, the joy of a new meeting after a difficult year and homemade meals that taste better than any food you can find in the world.

It should be noted that the kitchen in this house was created with great love and refined taste. I froze at the doorway: only low lamps gave cozy light in the dark, just like hygge style, Frank Sinatra’s music added to the authentic atmosphere, which reminded me of some of my favorite movies (full list is below), especially “The Bridges of Madison County”.

I was so inspired that I imagined shots for my future photosessions at that moment.

At first I was hesitant about asking for the owners to turn their house into a photo studio. And I am really grateful they not only allowed me, but also helped a lot with the arrangements.

I always thought photographing indoors is not my strong suit. I love and know how to catch the sunlight. Therefore, I decided to make a test photosession in the interior with a minimum of preparation.

Before the photoshoot my friend presented me with a hydrangea branch from her mother’s garden. It’s one of my favorite flowers in Montenegro, but a very rare flower for our area.

The marshmallow in the bakery that day looked like it was made specially for capturing. But obviously I let my team eat the “props” only after the photoshoot.

Most of all I love and appreciate such photoshoots when I am not only a photographer, but also involved in the real life around me. When I look at these photos, I feel warmth and coziness. I hope you do too.

If you’ve been following me on social media for a while then you may already have seen many photos from my Kitchen photostories. In the blog there are also 2 articles on this topic: Grandmother and Publications. But this particular photoshoot in the summer of 2018 was the start of my conscious journey of working with photostocks.

Behind the scenes.

Here I’m capturing the moment that will be published in the magazine one year later.

And my favorite films about cozy kitchen:

  • The Hundred-Foot Journey
  • It’s complicated
  • Chocolat
  • The Bridges of Madison County
  • Anne of Green Gables (I accept only one Anne, Canadian miniseries, started in 1985)
  • Julie & Julia
  • No reservations.

If you know more beautiful films about kitchens, write to me, I will add them to the list.

What does “kitchen” mean to you? For me, the kitchen is a lot of warm memories, one of the most intimate places in the world, where you want to return and where you are always welcome.

And I really want it to stay that way forever.

If you need these photos for your project just contact me for choosing and buying.

P.S. On the 9th of March 2022, the master who made furniture for this kitchen was killed by a shell of the Russian army in his house in Chernihiv (Ukraine).
