Extraordinary winter in Montenegro

Now I know the weather in Montenegro is unpredictable.

However, January 2017 began with the most unexpected surprise. The air temperature was below zero degrees for several days on the coast. By the way, there is no central heating in Montenegro. Water pipes froze in some houses. Roads were covered with ice. Actually it was a winter apocalypse for a southern country.

At this time «Frozen» was our daughter’s favorite cartoon. So she was more than happy to find ice anywhere.

The northern cold wind colored the sea in incredible shades of blue. We decided to go to the Kotor bay and see the wonders of winter nature.

A strong wind didn’t let me take photos. It was freezing cold.

I have never seen such snow-capped mountains and totally magical landscapes in Montenegro. We found a frozen waterfall, icy boats and palm trees with icicles.

The terrace of the beach cafe became a big ice rink.

I thought that was the biggest surprise from weather I had ever seen in Montenegro.

However, a few days later I opened the shutters in the morning and didn’t believe my eyes. Snow covered the coast! It melted by the end of the day, but children had time to make snowmen and play snowballs under white palm trees.

All photographs were taken from January 7 to January 11, 2017 in the places of the Boka Kotor Bay in Montenegro: Herceg Novi, Perast, Djenovici, Risan, Morinj.
